Accommodation application day is looming…..

A reference to the rise in university tuition fees in September 2012. How lucky we all must count ourselves! For those of you applying to arrive here in just THREE MONTHS TIME, you will have just managed to slip in under the current system.

While it would be great if all fees were abolished and we could study for free, I’m quite happy to be paying the £3.375 this September, rather than the £9,000 in 2012.

So as I say, just three months and counting until many of you will step onto the Ormskirk campus for the first time as Edge Hill University students. Things are beginning to take a big step towards the reality of it all.

Now that you will have your offers from Edge Hill, you will now get the chance to apply for accommodation, with application site going live next Thursday 23 June at 12 noon.

You should have received your login details for the website via post or e-mail at this stage, but here’s just a quick remider of how you apply:

Login via Hi at: hi.edgehill.ac.uk/accommodation

Username: Student ID Number

Password: Date of Birth DD/MM/YY

From there you will be able to decide which accommodation is your preference and send off your application.

For those who are still unsure of which accommodation to apply for, the best way of deciding is to visit our open day THIS SATURDAY 18 JUNE 10am - 3pm, where I, along with many other bloggers from Hi as well as other current students will be able to show you around the various accommodation.

We have a wide range of accommodation with any mix of catered/self-catered, en-suite/shared bathroom facilities and female-only/mixed halls.

There are four main types of accommodation to choose from in terms of buildings: back halls, Forest Court, main halls and ‘new halls’ (Founder’s Court and Graduate’s Court).

Each hall has there own unique selling point. Back halls are the only halls on campus to have a large open communal area or common room. Many of the Forest Court halls have en-suite facilities at a reasonable price setting. Main halls have some of the largest rooms on campus and generally include catering. New halls have televisions in the kitchens as well as in the bedrooms where they double up as PCs.

So the best way of deciding is to come and visit us.

And don’t forget, halls will be allocated on a first come first serve basis so make sure you’re sitting by your internet at 11.55am on Thursday 23 June!

AN Edge Hill University select took on a team from the HMS Campbeltown ship last Saturday.

Campbeltown docked in Liverpool last week to celebrate the life of this fine ship after over 20 years of service since being built in Birkenhead.

The ship will be decommissioned at the end of this month so the on board football team wanted to go out with a bang.

From kick off and through the first half it became evident that there was not much between the sides, but two pieces of individual brilliance from star man in the middle Danny Wilkinson ensured Edge Hill went in 2-0 up at half time.

Two superbly taken long range strikes came either side of a free kick from striker Paul Carey, although his dipping shot passed just inches over the crossbar.

The Navy boys looked to use their fitness in the second half to get themselves back in the game.

Edge Hill worked hard to keep their shape but as legs tired they allowed themselves to sway from formation and allow Campbeltown in for goals from AJ Jenkins and Russ Aitkin.

Late in the second half Carey managed to find himself on the left of the box just behind the backline and coolly slotted the ball across the keeper and in at the far post.

However, Edge Hill continued to tire and allowed Carl Hanson equalise for Campbeltown just two minutes from time.

Edge Hill had one more chance from a free kick with the last kick of the game but came to nothing and so penalties were needed after a full time score of 3-3.

Wilkinson kicked off scoring the first penalty and then proceeded to take the gloves for the rest of the shoot out.

It was not until the sixth penalty that Gillespie managed to save from McElroy, but Wilkinson kept Edge Hill in the game by returning the favour.

For the 11th it was back to Wilkinson again who bagged his fourth of the day.

As Gillespie stepped up to take his penalty, the ball agonisingly hit the right post head on and Edge Hill emerged victorious after some serious nail biting.

Man of the match Wilkinson was delighted with the result.

"It was a great effort by the whole team. I've been in goal before so was happy to be in for the shoot out.

"I think I was just a bit lucky with the goals, I saw the keeper come off the line both times so I just went for it and glad it went in twice."

TOMORROW sees yet another packed fixture list for Team Edge Hill, with 20 teams in action in the BUCS leaugues.

BADMINTON Men 1 v Edge Hill University Men's 2nd (h)

With just three matches left to play, the firsts will be looking for this to be their eighth straight victory and stay on course for their unbeaten season.

BADMINTON Men 2 v Edge Hill University 1st (a)

The seconds meanwhile will be still looking for a win to pull clear of Bangor in third who are just one point off with a game in hand.

BADMINTON Women v Manchester Metropolitan University Women's 1st (a)

A win against top of the table MMU will push badminton to second in the table just two points off top spot. The girls were victorious in the first leg at Edge Hill in the first match of the season so are full of confidence.

BASKETBALL Men 1 v Bangor Men's 1st (h)

A tough season so far in this higher league for basketball, but this is one match to target with Bangor just one place above bottom of the table Edge Hill. Danny Rainford will have to continue his fine form since coming into the side if Edge Hill are to get anything from the match.

BASKETBALL Men 2 v Glyndwr University Men’s 1st (h)

Victory for the seconds will see them leapfrog Glyndwr into fifth in the league and keep their push to finish as high up the league as possible with promotion all but impossible at this stage of the season.

FOOTBALL Men 1 v MMU Cheshire Men's 1st (a)

After a run of four matches without a win the firsts will look to beat MMU Cheshire who sit a place below and five points behind. A 3-0 win earlier in the season signals to another certain victory.

FOOTBALL Men 2 v Bangor University Men's 2nd (a)

This second versus third clash will be tough for Edge Hill who lost 3-2 earlier in the season, but a win today will seem them jump a place to top of the league and maintain their ambitions ov promotion this year.

FOOTBALL Men 3 v University of Chester (Warrington) Men's 1st (a)

Should the seconds beat Bangor, the thirds will jump to third with an expected win against bottom Chester Warrington whom they have already demolished 5-0 this season.

FOOTBALL Women v Keele University Women's 1st (a)

With two of their four matches left against bottom placed Keele, the women could very well be looking at finishing second and in a play off place for promotion this year.

HOCKEY Men 1 v University of Manchester Men's 4th (a)

A mouth watering top of the table clash in store following Manchester’s 3-2 win in November, Edge Hill must win to keep alive any chance of automatic promotion, with a play off spot virtually guaranteed already.

HOCKEY Men 2 v Keele University Men's 2nd (h)

Another top two clash for men’s hockey with yet again only one point seperating them. The seconds will have to rely on home advantage if they are to overcome a Keele side they fell 3-0 to already.

HOCKEY Women 1 v Bangor University Women's 1st (h)

The girls are in serious danger of dropping out of the play off spots with a tough match against top of the league Bangor, having already lost 3-1 this season things look dodgy for the firsts.

HOCKEY Women 2 v Glyndwr University Women's 1st (h)

If ever there was a match for Natalie Whelan’s team to win this is it. Both sit bottom of the table without a point and at home Edge Hill could be looking at their first win of the season.

NETBALL 1 v University of Manchester 4th (a)

This is the match that could confirm the firsts as division four champions, or allow Manchester to sneak in and put the pressure on Edge Hill’s unbeaten girls in the last two matches. Having won by only four points in the first match, the girls will need to be on top form for this crucial away fixture.

NETBALL 2 v University of Cumbria 2nd (h)

Edge Hill will almost certainly go top by Wednesday afternoon with a home fixture against bottom placed Cumbria who they have already beaten 53-47, and with a game in hand will go a point clear of Lancaster coming into the home stretch.

NETBALL 3 v University of Liverpool 4th (a)

It will be tough for the thirds to complete the set but a win against Liverpool, who they have already lost to and sit top, will see them go first.

RUGBY UNION Men 1 v Liverpool John Moores University Men’s 2nd (h)

Rugby union are on the cusp of automatic promotion and will look to home advantage, their first match on campus this season, to drive them over the finish line with a victory over John Moores.

RUGBY UNION Men 2 v University of Chester (Warrington) Men's 1st (a)

The seconds will be looking to get back to winning ways in order to chase down Chester Warrington in second place and continue their push for promotion in only their first season.

SQUASH Men v University of Lancaster Men’s 2nd (h)

With promotion just out of sight Terry Wood and his men will be looking to add to their impressive season and three wins in six matches. Although a win over Lancaster could leave a possibility of finishing second this season.

Edge Hill will be playing to keep the score down with the first leg finishing in a 17-0 loss against the league leaders who have been rampant this season.

The British Universities Gaelic Football Championships

So after a long hard six months for myself and my committee team, we competed in the British Universities Gaelic Football Championships.

On Saturday morning, 16 footballers travelled to compete in division three of the national championships.

This weekend tournament that consists of three divisions is a celebration of the great Irish sport that is now played in this country.

Gaelic Football has grown from strength to strength and in this, its 20th anniversary year of Gaelic in UK universities, there are now over 40 institutions taking part.

What is great about this sport is that while it is traditionally Irish and full of Irish players, students from all countries are now taking part.

Of the 16 of us that travelled, only half were Irish with the other half British (seven English and a token Welshman!)

I set this club up only in October 2009 so to have competed in the nationals for the second time in our short 18 month history is a huge achievement for us.

This year, we even had full Edge Hill University kit, courtesy of our Students’ Union who have supported us by also supplying transport.

Below you will see a picture of the kit (what was left of it after some tough weather conditions!)

We went down to Birmingham with one intention: to win!

I said to my team all week as captain: “If you’re not coming down to win this championship, don’t come!”

When all 16 of us turned up for the coach at 6.45am on Saturday morning I knew I had a group of committed young men.

We went down there and came away with wins against the University of Abertay and Newman College Birmingham in the group stages.

Unfortunately, due to the league structure, the University of Glasgow dropped down from division two having lost their two group matches and duly beat us in a evenly fought match.

Glasgow went on to defeat the University of Teeside by one goal and six points to one goal and five in the final.

The Edge Hill Gaelic Football Club is just one of the many clubs available for students to join, and if the sport you enjoy is not here, just do what I did and set one up!

Chris Malone’s team will be looking to make amends after last week’s 40-0 reversal away from home. Back at Green Lane this week, and with a close to full squad to pick from the seconds should be looking at a third win of the season to push them up the table.
